Converters use high-tech camera inspection systems to monitor the quality of each package and reduce reject rates. These vision systems verify the presence and position of the label on the tray, detect blow-by, and ensure the correct SKU label is used.
Clear labels on clear packaging, or white labels on white packaging without printing on critical areas of the label, make it difficult for vision systems to identify the actual sharp edges of the label, often resulting in false negatives that end up in the trash.
This problem could be solved by adding visible data matrix or QR codes to the label design, allowing camera inspection systems to verify the label's reference. However, these codes take up space on the label and impact the overall appearance of the design. By printing these QR or data matrix codes in invisible ink, they remain imperceptible under normal lighting conditions and are only revealed when the camera illuminates them with a special UV light.

Invisible ink is a specialized ink that is imperceptible under normal lighting conditions, but is visible under specific UV light. The transparent ink absorbs the UV light exposed by the vision inspection system and reflects a specific wavelength so that the camera can see the image. By adding invisible ink all around the edges of the label, the cut edges of the label can be highlighted so that they become visible to camera inspection systems. The camera can now check the position of the label on the bottom of the cup, the alignment, and even blow-by can be detected. Everyone wins!
